With spring weather comes spring cleaning. We spent last week overhauling the store to refresh for a new season and renewed energy. Unless you've been living under a rock, there's a chance you've heard of the organizing method taking the world by spark, .
Marie showcases her skillset on Netflix's Tidying Up With Marie Kondo. Much like our philosophy of no bad days, we think prioritizing joy is the best way to approach life. We also love that it's not just about cleaning which can feel daunting, but about what is good for the mind and soul.
She has lots of tips to help find your joy. One of the main aspects of her method is to tidy by category and having a bit of a heart to heart with your things. Whether you watch her show, read her book, or want to jump right in make sure to follow her basic rules:
Rule 01: Commit yourself to tidying up.
Rule 02: Imagine your ideal lifestyle.
Rule 03: Finish Discarding first.
Rule 04: Tidy by category, not by location
Rule 05: Follow the right order.
Rule 06: (Most important...) Ask yourself if it sparks joy.
We thought we'd go through categories of our own and what sparks joy for us. First up is personal pampering. It's easy to get caught up in products that reduce wrinkles, pull in your love handles or cover the bags under your eyes, but we think it's important to have a few items that remind you to love yourself just the way you are.
Moving on to clothing, it's easy to fill a closet with impulse buys. For us, what really sparks joy are the staple pieces that last a lifetime. Pieces that make you feel like YOU and transcend fickle fast fashion are worth keeping. Thank your trendy pieces for their service, give them a hug and send them on their way to the runway in the sky.
Marie may argue that one could have too many throw pillows, but we think coziness is a priority worth having. Your home should be an oasis of joy, and throw pillows are a way to create comfort in every room, without a lot of cost. Give them a hug and if they are soft and nap inducing they can stay. If they are stiff and only *look* cool, you know the drill, thank you and goodbye!
It may be extreme to dedicate an entire category to coffee... but you can't choose your joy! Maybe your drink of choice is tea... or bourbon... but we should all have that little personal escape. It's easy to collect drinkware from various trips or gifts, or perhaps that set you got for your wedding gathering dust, but we love to have that one cup that is really an extension of our arm. Taking 5 minutes to sit and enjoy your cup is a little slice of nirvana each day.
The little things can sometimes get dismissed as 'clutter' but a few sentimental pieces, some may literally spark joy, throughout a home give it personality that no one else can claim. You don't have to have a lot of pieces in your home but they should each mean something.
Now, we're not sure Marie would endorse our final rule: Spark NEW joy! Now that you're organized and cleared out of joyless items... there's room for new items to spark even more joy. Her methods can also be applied while shopping. If you keep in mind what will keep joy in the long run and what you've made room for in your home and heart, you won't feel any buyers' remorse.
